Meet season is here: a coach's survival playbook
Pack lists, timelines, and the mental game — everything that turns meet-day chaos into a routine.
The first meet of the season is equal parts excitement and chaos. The coaches who stay calm aren't lucky — they're systems people. Here's the playbook.
The night before
Leo packed, grips and wristbands in the bag, hair plan locked, snacks that are actually meet-legal, water, tape, and the one thing everyone forgets: the schedule. A printed meet-day checklist beats a frantic group text every time.
The warm-up window
Timed warm-up is where meets are won or lost emotionally. Have a fixed routine: the same order, the same cues, the same calm voice. Athletes borrow their confidence from you — if you look rushed, they feel rushed.
The mental game
Keep feedback tiny and positive between rotations. “Chin up, squeeze the landing” lands better than a full technical breakdown a nervous nine-year-old can't absorb. Save the coaching for Monday; meet day is for belief.
