The science of the hollow body — why coaches obsess over it
One shape shows up in nearly every skill in the sport. Here's why it's the best thing you can teach this week.
Walk into any serious gym and you'll hear it within minutes: “hollow!” It's the most-cued word in gymnastics for a reason.
One shape, every event
The hollow body — ribs in, hips slightly tucked, a long tight line — is the engine behind a good cast, a controlled handstand, a clean vault block, and a safe landing. Master it and every skill after it gets easier, because the body already knows how to be tight.
Why it transfers
Strength in gymnastics isn't just muscle; it's the ability to hold a shape under force. The hollow teaches an athlete to resist the body's urge to arch and pike at exactly the moments when control matters most — takeoff, flight, and landing.
How to build it
Holds, then rocks, then presses. Start on the floor, progress to the bar, then demand it inside real skills. If you teach one thing this week, teach the hollow — it pays dividends on all four events.
