Learning it — First exposures — slow, spotted, full support.

Arabesque on Floor (Mirror Check)

Gymnast performs arabesque in front of a mirror, checking: standing leg straight, back leg at or above 30°, flat back (not dropped chest), both hips square. 10 held reps of 5 seconds each side. Mirror feedback builds faster body awareness than coaching alone.
Look for: Standing leg locked · back leg squeezes up · arms are wings, not wilted flowers

Arabesque on Low Beam (Spot at Hip)

Coach stands beside and places a hand lightly at gymnast's hip for balance support. Gymnast performs arabesque on low beam. Reduce spot to fingertip-only as balance improves. Progress to no spot.
Look for: Standing leg locked · back leg squeezes up · arms are wings, not wilted flowers

Arabesque Walk to Hold (Beam)

Gymnast walks 3 steps on beam, stops in arabesque, holds 3 seconds. Repeat in both directions. Integrates the arabesque into a movement sequence — more transferable to competition than static holds in isolation.
Look for: Standing leg locked · back leg squeezes up · arms are wings, not wilted flowers

Building it — Reps and consistency once the shape is owned.

Single-Leg Deadlift (Light Resistance)

Standing on one leg, gymnast hinges at hip (like an arabesque) lifting free leg behind. 3x10 per leg with or without a light dumbbell in opposite hand. Directly trains the hip extensor and stabilizer chain for arabesque leg lifting.

Hip Extension Squeezes (Prone on Bench)

Lying prone over a bench (hips at edge), gymnast lifts one straight leg and holds at arabesque height for 5 seconds. 3x8 per leg. Isolates the glute and hamstring engagement needed to hold leg height without tilting the pelvis.

Balance Beam Arabesque Endurance

On low beam, hold arabesque for 15 seconds per side. 3x. Build holding endurance — competition routines require sustained arabesque positions, not just a quick peak.

Polishing it — Competition-ready cleanup and connections.

Perform the Arabesque to 30° independently

Athlete performs the full Arabesque to 30° on their own — spot only as needed. Goal: consistent, confident, competition-ready execution with the cue: "Standing leg locked · back leg squeezes up · arms are wings, not wilted flowers."
Look for: Standing leg locked · back leg squeezes up · arms are wings, not wilted flowers

Don't just read it — coach it.
