← Full Beam Mount -- Straddle Sit skill breakdown

Learning it — First exposures — slow, spotted, full support.

Floor Straddle Jump to Sit (Line Drill)

On a floor line or tape strip, gymnast straddles and lands seated straddled on the line. Perfect foot placement awareness with zero fall risk. 10 reps — focus on symmetric leg separation and soft landing. Required before any beam contact.
Look for: Jump · straddle · land QUIET — hips land, not feet first

Low Beam Straddle Mount (8-inch)

Gymnast mounts the low practice beam (or a balance board) in straddle sit from a standing position beside it. Hands on beam, jump, straddle land. Develops grip placement and body positioning before full beam height.
Look for: Jump · straddle · land QUIET — hips land, not feet first

Full Beam Mount with Mat Assist

Stack a panel mat beside the beam to reduce the jump height required. Gymnast mounts to straddle sit. Reduces the physical barrier while maintaining correct mechanics. Lower mat height progressively until no mat is used.
Look for: Jump · straddle · land QUIET — hips land, not feet first

Building it — Reps and consistency once the shape is owned.

Straddle Compression Holds (Floor)

Seated in wide straddle, gymnast presses both hands flat beside hips and lifts body off the floor (or attempts to). 3x5 holds of 3 seconds. Builds the hip flexor and adductor strength needed to lift the straddle position cleanly onto the beam.

Straddle Bounce and Hold (Trampoline)

On a trampoline, gymnast jumps to a straddle position in the air and holds before landing. 3x8. Develops the fast straddle activation and aerial body awareness for the mount jump.

Balance Walks (Narrow Taped Line)

Walk heel-to-toe on a 2-inch taped line across the floor without stepping off. 3 lengths. Fundamental proprioceptive balance training — the single most neglected L1 beam prerequisite.

Polishing it — Competition-ready cleanup and connections.

Perform the Beam Mount — Straddle Sit independently

Athlete performs the full Beam Mount — Straddle Sit on their own — spot only as needed. Goal: consistent, confident, competition-ready execution with the cue: "Jump · straddle · land QUIET — hips land, not feet first."
Look for: Jump · straddle · land QUIET — hips land, not feet first
