Learning it — First exposures — slow, spotted, full support.
Single-Leg Balance Holds (Floor Line)
Stand on one foot on a floor line, hold coupé or passé for 10 seconds. 5 reps each leg. If a gymnast cannot hold 10 seconds on the floor, she is not ready for the beam. Build this standard first.
Look for: Coupé = toe to ankle · Passé = toe to knee · hold 2 seconds each step
Coupé Walk on Low Beam
Walk the length of the low beam placing each foot in coupé position before stepping through. Coach walks beside for safety. Slow and deliberate — this is not a march, it's a controlled balance transfer. 3 lengths.
Look for: Coupé = toe to ankle · Passé = toe to knee · hold 2 seconds each step
Passé Balance Progression (Eyes Open → Eyes Closed)
On the floor, hold passé balance eyes open for 5 seconds, then eyes closed for 5 seconds. 3x each leg. Eyes-closed balance dramatically improves proprioceptive feedback for beam balance and fast-tracks nervous system adaptation.
Look for: Coupé = toe to ankle · Passé = toe to knee · hold 2 seconds each step
Building it — Reps and consistency once the shape is owned.
Single-Leg Calf Raises (Foot-Point Emphasis)
Standing on one leg, fully pointed foot, perform 20 calf raises. 3x per leg. Builds the ankle stabilizer and calf strength that maintains balance during beam walks and relevé positions.
Passé Leg Lateral Holds (Hip External Rotation)
Seated on bench, gymnast lifts one leg into passé position and holds 10 seconds without hands. 3x each side. Strengthens the hip external rotators that hold the passé position clean and prevents the knee from dropping during walks.
Ankle Alphabet (Seated)
Seated, gymnast draws each letter of the alphabet with a fully pointed foot. Both feet. Builds comprehensive ankle joint strength and mobility for the fine balance corrections constantly made during beam walks.
Polishing it — Competition-ready cleanup and connections.
Perform the Coupé / Passé Walks independently
Athlete performs the full Coupé / Passé Walks on their own — spot only as needed. Goal: consistent, confident, competition-ready execution with the cue: "Coupé = toe to ankle · Passé = toe to knee · hold 2 seconds each step."
Look for: Coupé = toe to ankle · Passé = toe to knee · hold 2 seconds each step
Don't just read it — coach it.
