Forward Roll Drills

7 teaching drills for Forward Roll — the progression to take an athlete from first attempt to clean and consistent.

← Full Forward Roll skill breakdown

Learning it — First exposures — slow, spotted, full support.

Chin-to-Chest Hold (Isometric Neck Flexion)

Gymnast tucks chin and holds a rolled-up shirt or towel against her chest using only her neck — no hands. 10 holds of 5 seconds. The chin-to-chest position is the single most common forward roll breakdown — build the habit through isolated holds before the roll.
Look for: Chin to chest · push with hands · finish in a squat — don't collapse sideways

Forward Roll Down a Wedge Mat

Roll down an incline wedge (low end elevated). The slope generates rotation momentum so the gymnast experiences what a smooth roll feels like without having to generate it herself. Isolates the tuck and chin positions without the push phase. 8 reps.
Look for: Chin to chest · push with hands · finish in a squat — don't collapse sideways

Push-and-Stand Completion Drill

Gymnast completes each forward roll to a standing position — no sitting down, no hand push off the floor for standing. 10 consecutive rolls. If she cannot stand up from each roll, the abdominal compression and hip flexor strength are insufficient for a clean skill.
Look for: Chin to chest · push with hands · finish in a squat — don't collapse sideways

Building it — Reps and consistency once the shape is owned.

Tuck Roll Holds (Cannonball)

Seated in tuck position (chin to chest, knees hugged in, rounded spine), hold perfectly still for 5 seconds. 3x8. Builds the spinal flexion endurance and body awareness for the round-spine position maintained throughout a forward roll.

Hollow Body Rocks

From hollow body on floor, gymnast rocks forward and backward — small, controlled. 3x15. The hollow body is the connected tension that makes a forward roll smooth rather than floppy. Direct conditioning.

Core Roll-Up (No Momentum)

Lying supine, gymnast rolls to seated upright position with arms crossed on chest — no swing, no arm throw. 3x10. Builds the abdominal strength to complete the forward roll without flopping to one side or using hands to push up.

Polishing it — Competition-ready cleanup and connections.

Perform the Forward Roll independently

Athlete performs the full Forward Roll on their own — spot only as needed. Goal: consistent, confident, competition-ready execution with the cue: "Chin to chest · push with hands · finish in a squat — don't collapse sideways."
Look for: Chin to chest · push with hands · finish in a squat — don't collapse sideways

Don't just read it — coach it.
