Learning it — First exposures — slow, spotted, full support.
Half Turn on Floor Line
On a 2-inch taped floor line, gymnast performs a 180° half turn in relevé. Must finish on the line. 10 reps each direction. Establish turn mechanics and spotting on the floor before any elevated surface work.
Look for: Relevé · spot the wall · turn through the toes, not around them
Half Turn on Low Beam (Hands Available)
On low beam, gymnast performs the half turn with hands lightly touching beam if needed for balance. Progress to arms in T-position, then arms at sides. Hands give psychological safety while technique develops.
Look for: Relevé · spot the wall · turn through the toes, not around them
Half Turn on Beam — Spot at Hips
Coach places one hand lightly at gymnast's hips during the turn on full-height beam. Gymnast performs the turn; coach provides minimal rotational guidance only if needed. Reduces spot contact rep by rep.
Look for: Relevé · spot the wall · turn through the toes, not around them
Building it — Reps and consistency once the shape is owned.
Relevé Holds (Double Leg → Single Leg)
On the floor: hold double-leg relevé 10 seconds → single-leg relevé 10 seconds. 3x each. Turns are performed in relevé — without the strength to sustain relevé balance, turns will always land off the beam.
Pirouette Prep — Spot the Wall
Stand 2 feet from a wall, perform a half turn and immediately find the wall with eyes. 3x10 each direction. Isolates the spotting mechanism (head last, eyes find target) which is the primary technical skill for successful beam turns.
Toe-Relevé Walking (Metronome Paced)
Walk across the gym on relevé, timed to a metronome at 60 bpm. 3 lengths. Slow, controlled relevé walking builds the sustained ankle and calf endurance needed for beam turn stability.
Polishing it — Competition-ready cleanup and connections.
Perform the Half Turn (180°) independently
Athlete performs the full Half Turn (180°) on their own — spot only as needed. Goal: consistent, confident, competition-ready execution with the cue: "Relevé · spot the wall · turn through the toes, not around them."
Look for: Relevé · spot the wall · turn through the toes, not around them
Don't just read it — coach it.
