← Full ¾ Handstand skill breakdown
Learning it — First exposures — slow, spotted, full support.
¾ Handstand Wall Hold
Against the wall, gymnast holds a ¾ handstand position (hips above shoulders, not fully vertical). Coach marks the target height on the wall with tape. Hold 3 seconds. 6 reps. The wall provides safety while the body learns the inverted-but-not-vertical position.
Look for: Kick to ¾ — hips above shoulders, feet above hips — freeze there
Kick to ¾ Handstand + Stop
From a lunge, gymnast kicks to ¾ handstand and intentionally stops before reaching vertical. 8 reps. Control of the kick-up momentum is the core skill — a gymnast who can stop at ¾ has far more handstand body awareness than one who overshoots vertical every time.
Look for: Kick to ¾ — hips above shoulders, feet above hips — freeze there
¾ Handstand to Forward Roll (Natural Exit)
Kick to ¾ handstand, tuck chin, roll out forward. This is a natural exit from the ¾ handstand and directly leads to the handstand forward roll progression. 6 reps — gymnast practices the controlled rollout without pressure to achieve full handstand first.
Look for: Kick to ¾ — hips above shoulders, feet above hips — freeze there
Building it — Reps and consistency once the shape is owned.
Bear Position Hold (Knees Off Floor)
On hands and knees, lift knees 3 inches, hold hollow body, hold 20 seconds. 3x. The ¾ handstand requires significant wrist and anterior shoulder endurance in a partially inverted position. The bear hold develops this exact load pattern at a manageable intensity.
Donkey Kick Hops
On hands and feet, hop both feet off the floor toward a handstand. 3x10. Develops the explosive hip extension needed to kick to ¾ handstand, and the wrist load tolerance for repeated handstand attempts.
Pike Pulses (Compression)
From seated pike, gymnast actively pulls chest toward thighs using only hip flexors — no hands. 3x15 pulses. Builds the hip flexor compression strength needed to hold the ¾ handstand position without the hips collapsing back to vertical.
Polishing it — Competition-ready cleanup and connections.
Perform the ¾ Handstand independently
Athlete performs the full ¾ Handstand on their own — spot only as needed. Goal: consistent, confident, competition-ready execution with the cue: "Kick to ¾ — hips above shoulders, feet above hips — freeze there."
Look for: Kick to ¾ — hips above shoulders, feet above hips — freeze there
Don't just read it — coach it.
