Learning it — First exposures — slow, spotted, full support.

Needle Kick Against Wall (Alignment Check)

Gymnast stands with back to a wall, kicks one leg up to vertical — the kicked heel should touch the wall. This verifies true vertical leg height and prevents the 'needle that's actually 45°' that is extremely common without objective feedback.
Look for: Standing leg straight · kicked leg VERTICAL · chest doesn't drop

Needle Kick on Low Beam (Support Available)

On low beam, gymnast performs needle kick with one hand lightly touching a coach's shoulder for balance. Progress: fingertip touch, then no touch. Focus is on the kicked leg reaching vertical, not on the balance.
Look for: Standing leg straight · kicked leg VERTICAL · chest doesn't drop

Needle Kick + Hold 3 Seconds (Balance Standard)

Needle kick is held for 3 seconds before lowering. If the gymnast cannot hold 3 seconds, the skill is not competition-ready. Build hold time as the primary progression metric.
Look for: Standing leg straight · kicked leg VERTICAL · chest doesn't drop

Building it — Reps and consistency once the shape is owned.

Hamstring Flexibility — Standing Leg Raises

Standing beside a wall, gymnast raises straight leg as high as possible, holds 3 seconds, lowers. 3x10 per leg. The needle kick requires a nearly flat hamstring — active hamstring flexibility is the primary physical requirement.

Scorpion Stretch + Active Hip Flexion

Lying prone, reach foot toward head (scorpion position) and hold 15 seconds per leg. Builds the combined hamstring and hip flexor flexibility that allows the kick leg to reach vertical while the standing hip stays open.

Core Anti-Extension Holds (Stir the Pot)

On a stability ball in plank, gymnast draws small circles with forearms. 3x30 seconds. The needle kick requires the torso to remain completely vertical while the kick leg reaches overhead — anti-extension core stability is the key stabilizer.

Polishing it — Competition-ready cleanup and connections.

Perform the Needle Kick independently

Athlete performs the full Needle Kick on their own — spot only as needed. Goal: consistent, confident, competition-ready execution with the cue: "Standing leg straight · kicked leg VERTICAL · chest doesn't drop."
Look for: Standing leg straight · kicked leg VERTICAL · chest doesn't drop

Don't just read it — coach it.
