Learning it — First exposures — slow, spotted, full support.

Theraband Toe Point (Resistance Training)

Theraband looped around the foot, gymnast actively points against the resistance — full plantar flexion. 3x15 per foot. The most effective single drill for building the muscle memory and strength for pointed toes. Use it as a warm-up tool every single practice.
Look for: Write with your toes · squeeze the whole leg · pointed is a whole-leg decision, not just a foot

Pointed Toes + Squeezed Legs Check

Gymnast lies supine, legs together, points toes and simultaneously squeezes the entire leg — inner thigh, quads, glutes. Coach checks: are legs fully together? Is the squeeze full? Pointed toes without leg squeeze is 50% of the position. 10 held reps of 5 seconds.
Look for: Write with your toes · squeeze the whole leg · pointed is a whole-leg decision, not just a foot

Mirror Pointed Toes (Visual Feedback)

Gymnast points toes and checks in a mirror — are both feet pointing identically? Is one sickled? Is the point full? Mirror feedback for pointed toes is dramatically faster than verbal coaching because the gymnast can see exactly what the judge sees. 2 minutes per practice.
Look for: Write with your toes · squeeze the whole leg · pointed is a whole-leg decision, not just a foot

Building it — Reps and consistency once the shape is owned.

Towel Toe Scrunches (Intrinsic Foot Strength)

Foot flat on a small towel, scrunch the towel toward the heel using only the toes. 3x15 per foot. Builds the intrinsic foot muscles (flexor digitorum brevis, lumbricals) that control the toe point. Most gymnasts have weak intrinsic foot muscles and compensate by over-pointing at the ankle — which creates sickled feet.

Calf Raise + Full Point (Combined)

Rise to full relevé, then add maximum toe point at the top. 3x20. Conditions the calf, Achilles, and foot simultaneously in the full extension chain that creates a beautiful toe point. This is the single most efficient pointed toe conditioning exercise.

Ankle Alphabet (Flexibility + Strength)

Seated, fully pointed foot, draw each letter of the alphabet using the ankle and foot. Both feet. This develops comprehensive ankle mobility and strength in all planes of movement — which produces a more consistent point and reduces ankle injury risk.

Polishing it — Competition-ready cleanup and connections.

Perform the Pointed Toes independently

Athlete performs the full Pointed Toes on their own — spot only as needed. Goal: consistent, confident, competition-ready execution with the cue: "Write with your toes · squeeze the whole leg · pointed is a whole-leg decision, not just a foot."
Look for: Write with your toes · squeeze the whole leg · pointed is a whole-leg decision, not just a foot

Don't just read it — coach it.
