← Full Pullover skill breakdown
Learning it — First exposures — slow, spotted, full support.
Pull-and-Tuck Hold (Pullover Prep)
From a hang on a low bar, pull the bar in toward your hips while driving your knees up toward the bar, and hold this tucked, bar-at-the-hips position 2-3 seconds, then lower with control. 6 reps. This grooves the arm-pull and hip-lift that start every pullover. Cue: pull the bar to your belly, toes to the bar. If she cannot pull the bar in yet, build the pull first with tuck-up hangs.
Look for: Chin up · hips up · toes over — in that order, every time
Spotted Pullover with Hip Lift Assist
Coach places hand under gymnast's hips/lower back. Gymnast does a chin-up, lifts hips, coach assists the hip rotation over the bar. Gymnast must actively pull and contribute — not a passive carry. Reduce hip assist as abdominal strength develops.
Look for: Chin up · hips up · toes over — in that order, every time
Straddle Pullover to Front Support
Perform pullover with legs straddled wide. Straddling reduces the moment arm, making the rotation significantly easier. Once gymnast can complete the full rotation consistently in straddle, close the legs progressively (pike, then straight) over several sessions.
Look for: Chin up · hips up · toes over — in that order, every time
Building it — Reps and consistency once the shape is owned.
Bent-Knee Hanging Crunches
Hanging from bar, gymnast tucks knees to chest 3x12. This is the hip-to-bar compression that drives the pullover rotation. Progress to straight-leg hanging crunches (toes to bar) as strength builds.
Chin-Up Negatives
Coach lifts gymnast to chin-over-bar position; gymnast slowly lowers over a 5-count. 3x5. Eccentric chin-up strength is the most critical prerequisite for the pullover — without it, gymnasts simply drop instead of rotate.
Hollow Body Bar Pull-Ins
Lying on floor in hollow position, gymnast holds a dowel rod overhead and performs 10 hollow rocks while pressing the rod toward her feet (simulating the arm pull path of the pullover). 3 sets. Builds hollow-to-compression muscle memory.
Polishing it — Competition-ready cleanup and connections.
Perform the Pullover independently
Athlete performs the full Pullover on their own — spot only as needed. Goal: consistent, confident, competition-ready execution with the cue: "Chin up · hips up · toes over — in that order, every time."
Look for: Chin up · hips up · toes over — in that order, every time
Don't just read it — coach it.
