Learning it — First exposures — slow, spotted, full support.
Relevé Walk on Floor (Heel Height Check)
Walk the full floor diagonal in relevé. Coach watches for heel drop between steps — a very common compensation. Mark with tape any point where heels drop. Gymnast must be able to walk the full length before beam relevé walks are introduced. 3 lengths.
Look for: Heels stay up the whole length — if they drop between steps, start over
Relevé Walk on Low Beam (Support Available)
Walk the low beam in relevé, hands lightly touching the beam for balance if needed. Progress: both hands → one hand → no hands. Focus on sustained heel height the full length — not just the beginning when legs are fresh.
Look for: Heels stay up the whole length — if they drop between steps, start over
Relevé Walk + Arm Positions (Competition Realistic)
Relevé walk with arms in T-position, then overhead, then in a designated choreography position. The relevé walk in competition always has specific arm requirements — train it with arms from the beginning so balance is not disrupted when arms are added later.
Look for: Heels stay up the whole length — if they drop between steps, start over
Building it — Reps and consistency once the shape is owned.
Timed Relevé Walk (Endurance)
How long can the gymnast walk in relevé without a heel drop? Time it. Record it. Progress it. A competition beam relevé walk must cover the full beam length — approximately 5 meters — without heel drop. Build the endurance to exceed this distance.
Relevé Walk with Resistance Band (Ankle Stability)
Band looped around both ankles (light resistance), gymnast walks in relevé against the band pull. 3 lengths. The resistance forces greater peroneal and ankle stabilizer activation — makes the unresisted relevé walk feel easier by comparison.
Heel Raise Iso-Hold at Top (Endurance at Peak)
Rise to maximum relevé and hold — don't lower. Hold until form breaks. Rest 30 seconds. 3x. Builds the specific endurance for the sustained top-of-relevé position that relevé walks require. Most gymnasts can rise but cannot sustain — this conditions the sustain.
Polishing it — Competition-ready cleanup and connections.
Perform the Relevé Walk independently
Athlete performs the full Relevé Walk on their own — spot only as needed. Goal: consistent, confident, competition-ready execution with the cue: "Heels stay up the whole length — if they drop between steps, start over."
Look for: Heels stay up the whole length — if they drop between steps, start over
Don't just read it — coach it.
