7 teaching drills for Sprint + Hurdle + Punch — the progression to take an athlete from first attempt to clean and consistent.
← Full Sprint + Hurdle + Punch skill breakdown
Learning it — First exposures — slow, spotted, full support.
Cone Sprint + Hurdle Target
Set a low cone or panel mat at hurdle distance (~8 ft from board). Athlete sprints full speed, hurdles over the cone landing two-feet simultaneously, then punches off a small panel mat. Teaches correct step-hurdle-punch sequence without vault table pressure. Progress by removing hesitation between each phase.
Look for: RUN · CIRCLE · PUNCH — one rhythm, no extra steps
Hurdle to Stuck Two-Foot Punch (Resi)
Sprint and hurdle onto a low resi mat, landing two-feet and immediately rebounding to a tall, tight straight jump (arms up, hollow body). Forces a real two-foot punch instead of a one-foot jump and teaches the gymnast to feel 'grounded' pressure through both feet before any vault.
Look for: RUN · CIRCLE · PUNCH — one rhythm, no extra steps
Board-Only Punch Drill
Place board on the floor with no table. Gymnast does a 3-step run, hurdles, and punches the board as hard as possible finishing in a straight jump landing on a crash mat. Focus: aggressive board contact, arms already up at punch contact, no soft staggered landing. Measure height of jump — competition mindset.
Look for: RUN · CIRCLE · PUNCH — one rhythm, no extra steps
Building it — Reps and consistency once the shape is owned.
Bounding Hurdles
Set 4–6 cones 4–5 ft apart. Athlete bounds through in continuous two-foot hurdle jumps — no walking steps between. Develops explosive bilateral leg power and hip timing needed for a real vault hurdle approach.
Sprint-Stop Holds (Isometric)
Athlete sprints 10 meters, freezes in perfect lunge position at coach's signal, holds 3–5 seconds, resets. Builds deceleration-to-explosion control, proprioceptive stability, and the hip flexor/glute engagement needed to convert sprint energy into upward punch.
Single-Leg Plyometric Hurdle Hops
Using a low beam or box (~8 inches), athlete hops over and back on one leg x10 each side. Develops unilateral ankle stiffness and calf/achilles resilience for the brief asymmetrical contact of the hurdle footfall before the bilateral punch.
Polishing it — Competition-ready cleanup and connections.
Perform the Sprint + Hurdle + Punch independently
Athlete performs the full Sprint + Hurdle + Punch on their own — spot only as needed. Goal: consistent, confident, competition-ready execution with the cue: "RUN · CIRCLE · PUNCH — one rhythm, no extra steps."
Look for: RUN · CIRCLE · PUNCH — one rhythm, no extra steps
