Learning it — First exposures — slow, spotted, full support.

Step Kick on Floor Line (Height and Technique Check)

Step kick on a floor line — kicking foot must stay on the line, standing foot on the line, kick must be straight-kneed and pointed. 10 reps per leg per direction. If either the balance or the kick technique is unsatisfactory on the floor, beam work is premature.
Look for: Step · kick the leg straight · point the toe — height comes from the hip, not the knee

Step Kick on Low Beam (Spot at Hip)

Coach spots at gymnast's hip for balance. Gymnast performs step kick on low beam, building height progressively. Focus: the kick is initiated from the hip, not the knee — a bent-knee step kick is a deduction in every context.
Look for: Step · kick the leg straight · point the toe — height comes from the hip, not the knee

Step Kick on Beam + Walk Out (Connection)

Step kick on beam, hold 2 seconds in the kicked position, then walk forward 3 steps. The step kick in competition is always a connection element embedded in a walking passage — train it in movement context from the beginning.

Building it — Reps and consistency once the shape is owned.

Active Hip Flexion Kicks (Kick Height Conditioning)

Standing, kick front leg as high as possible with completely straight knee. Hold 2 seconds. 3x15 per leg daily. Step kick height is determined by active hip flexion strength — passive flexibility is irrelevant if the gymnast cannot actively lift the leg.

Standing Leg Stability During Kick (Single-Leg Eccentric)

Single-leg squat (standing leg), slow descent, return. 3x8 per leg. The step kick requires the standing leg to remain perfectly stable while the kick leg moves at full speed — eccentric standing leg strength is the balance stabilizer.

Pointed Toe Conditioning (Kick-Specific)

Theraband around foot — point against resistance 3x15 per foot. The step kick's pointed toe must be maintained throughout the kick arc, not just at the peak. Resistance band conditioning builds the plantar flexor endurance for a sustained point under dynamic load.

Polishing it — Competition-ready cleanup and connections.

Perform the Step Kick on Beam independently

Athlete performs the full Step Kick on Beam on their own — spot only as needed. Goal: consistent, confident, competition-ready execution with the cue: "Step · kick the leg straight · point the toe — height comes from the hip, not the knee."
