Learning it — First exposures — slow, spotted, full support.
Kick to Handstand Flatback on Mat Stack
Gymnast walks up to a stacked mat at table height, places hands, kicks to handstand over the stack and falls to a flatback on a resi. No run — isolates the hand placement, kick, and body position over the table without approach speed. Coach spots at hips.
Look for: Lean · Kick · Push — punch table, show handstand, fall flat
Board Punch to Handstand Flatback with Spot
Short 3-step run, punch board, coach spots waist lifting the gymnast's hips overhead to handstand, gymnast holds tension and falls to resi in a hollow flatback. Progress: reduce spot intensity as gymnast demonstrates consistent handstand line.
Look for: Lean · Kick · Push — punch table, show handstand, fall flat
Prone Fall-to-Flatback Tension Drill
Gymnast stands on panel mat, falls forward like a plank onto a resi — body must stay completely rigid (no banana). This simulates the descent from handstand to flatback and teaches total body tension before the vault introduces speed.
Look for: Lean · Kick · Push — punch table, show handstand, fall flat
Building it — Reps and consistency once the shape is owned.
Handstand Wall Holds
Handstand against wall x 3 sets of 20–30 seconds. Focus on hollow body — no arch, active shoulders, squeezed legs. This is the exact shape the gymnast must pass through over the table. Track improvement in hold time.
Pike Compression Seated
Seated on floor, legs straight, gymnast presses hands into the ground beside hips and attempts to lift legs (or at minimum feels full compression effort) x 3x10 presses held 3 seconds. Builds hip flexor and core compression strength needed to kick legs up and over in the vault table phase.
Hollow Body Rockers + Plank Taps
10 hollow rockers immediately into 10 shoulder tap planks (hands directly under shoulders). 3 sets. Builds the anterior chain integration — hollow body + shoulder stability — required to maintain shape from punch through handstand.
Polishing it — Competition-ready cleanup and connections.
Perform the Stretch Jump to Handstand Flatback independently
Athlete performs the full Stretch Jump to Handstand Flatback on their own — spot only as needed. Goal: consistent, confident, competition-ready execution with the cue: "Lean · Kick · Push — punch table, show handstand, fall flat."
Look for: Lean · Kick · Push — punch table, show handstand, fall flat
Don't just read it — coach it.
