Learning it — First exposures — slow, spotted, full support.

Heel-to-Toe Walk on Floor Line

Walk heel-to-toe on a 2-inch tape line — each foot must land directly in front of the other on the line. 3 lengths. If a gymnast cannot walk a floor line heel-to-toe without stepping off, she is not ready for beam walk work. This is the mandatory prerequisite.
Look for: Heel-toe · eyes forward · arms out — every step is a balance decision

Walk Forward on Low Beam (Arms T-Position)

Walk the low beam with arms in T-position, heel-to-toe, eyes forward. Coach walks beside. 3 full lengths. Focus: arms stay level and still, head does not look down at feet, each step is placed with intention rather than momentum.
Look for: Heel-toe · eyes forward · arms out — every step is a balance decision

Walk Forward on Beam + Arm Position Changes

Walk forward on the full beam while transitioning through arm positions: T → overhead → front → T. The walk in competition always involves arm choreography — training the walk with moving arms from the beginning prevents the wobble that occurs when arms are added later.
Look for: Heel-toe · eyes forward · arms out — every step is a balance decision

Building it — Reps and consistency once the shape is owned.

Heel-to-Toe Balance Endurance

Walk heel-to-toe on a floor line for 2 full minutes without stepping off. Time it. Build to 3 minutes. Beam walk endurance is a real conditioning requirement — a gymnast who loses balance on the beam during a walk is fatigued, not just unlucky.

Single-Leg Relevé Balance (Step Simulation)

Every forward beam step briefly involves single-leg balance. Single-leg relevé holds: build to 15 seconds per leg. 3x. The quality of each beam step is determined by the single-leg balance capacity at that moment.

Ankle Proprioception (Eyes Closed Line Walk)

Walk heel-to-toe on a floor line with eyes closed. 3 lengths. Eyes-closed balance walking develops the proprioceptive ankle system that governs beam balance — gymnasts who rely entirely on vision fall when they momentarily look away.

Polishing it — Competition-ready cleanup and connections.

Perform the Walk Forward on Beam independently

Athlete performs the full Walk Forward on Beam on their own — spot only as needed. Goal: consistent, confident, competition-ready execution with the cue: "Heel-toe · eyes forward · arms out — every step is a balance decision."
