Gymnastics Lesson Plan Template

A good gymnastics lesson plan keeps every athlete moving, hits the skills that matter for their level, and leaves room for the coaching that actually makes progress stick. Here is a simple, repeatable template you can use for any class.

How to structure a 60-minute class

Most effective gymnastics classes follow the same rhythm. Adjust the minutes to your class length, but keep the order:

  1. Warm-up & shaping (8–10 min). Get heart rates up, then drill body positions — hollow, arch, tight jumps. Shaping early pays off on every event.
  2. Flexibility & strength (6–8 min). Splits, bridges, and level-appropriate conditioning while bodies are warm.
  3. Event rotations (30–35 min). Break into stations by event — vault, bars, beam, floor. One station is a “with-coach” station for the day’s priority skill; the rest run as independent drills.
  4. Conditioning circuit (5–6 min). A short, high-effort finish that rotates focus (core, upper body, legs) across the week.
  5. Cool-down & recap (3–4 min). Stretch, name one thing each athlete improved, and set the goal for next time.

Copy this into a doc or print it: Level — Date — Warm-up — Flexibility/Strength — Vault (skill + drill) — Bars (skill + drill) — Beam (skill + drill) — Floor (skill + drill) — Conditioning — Notes. If you’d rather not rebuild it every week, KINETIC generates a full week-by-week plan for every USAG and Xcel level automatically, then lets you tweak it and coach straight from your phone on the floor.

Frequently asked questions

How long should a gymnastics lesson plan be?

Match it to your class: a 60-minute class typically uses about 10 minutes of warm-up and shaping, 30–35 minutes of event rotations, and the rest for conditioning and cool-down.

How do I plan for a mixed-level class?

Plan by event station rather than by athlete. Set the skill and drill for each level at the station, and rotate your with-coach time so every athlete gets a focused turn.

Do I need a new plan every week?

The structure stays the same; the target skills and conditioning focus rotate. Tools like KINETIC keep the structure and advance the skills for you week to week.
