← Full Forward Roll Dismount skill breakdown
Learning it — First exposures — slow, spotted, full support.
Forward Roll on Floor (Tucked)
Standard mat forward roll with emphasis on chin-to-chest and smooth rotation. Until a gymnast can do a consistent floor forward roll with fully tucked chin and smooth landing, bar dismount work shouldn't begin. 10 reps each practice.
Look for: Chin to chest · bar stays close · land soft
Forward Roll Dismount from Low Bar with Mat Ramp
Place a wedge mat against the bar so gymnast rolls forward down the incline. The ramp slows the rotation and provides confidence. Gymnast keeps hands on bar until hips are over, then releases to stand. Coach spots at upper back.
Look for: Chin to chest · bar stays close · land soft
Spotted Forward Roll Dismount (Full Height)
Coach spots under gymnast's upper back and shoulders, controlling descent from bar. Gymnast focuses on tucking chin, staying compact, and landing facing bar. Reduce spot as gymnast demonstrates consistent head position and rotation control.
Look for: Chin to chest · bar stays close · land soft
Building it — Reps and consistency once the shape is owned.
Tuck-and-Roll Conditioning Holds
From standing, gymnast drops into a tight tuck (chin to chest, knees pulled in, arms wrapped) and holds without rolling — pure tuck tension. 3x5 holds. Builds the body awareness and muscle memory of the compact tuck position used in the dismount.
Hollow Body Bar Hanging Tuck-Ups
From bar hang, gymnast tucks both knees to chest and returns slowly. 3x10. Trains the hanging compression that initiates the bar roll dismount and builds grip endurance needed to control bar contact throughout.
Neck Flexion Strengthening (Floor)
Lying supine, gymnast lifts head and holds chin-to-chest position for 10 seconds x8. Sounds trivial — but chin-to-chest is the most commonly broken position in the forward roll dismount. Build the deep neck flexors.
Polishing it — Competition-ready cleanup and connections.
Perform the Forward Roll Dismount independently
Athlete performs the full Forward Roll Dismount on their own — spot only as needed. Goal: consistent, confident, competition-ready execution with the cue: "Chin to chest · bar stays close · land soft."
Look for: Chin to chest · bar stays close · land soft
Don't just read it — coach it.
