7 teaching drills for Forward Safety Roll — the progression to take an athlete from first attempt to clean and consistent.

← Full Forward Safety Roll skill breakdown

Learning it — First exposures — slow, spotted, full support.

Forward Safety Roll on Wedge Mat (Gravity Assist)

On an inclined wedge mat (low end elevated), gymnast practices the forward safety roll. The slope provides momentum so she can focus entirely on the chin tuck and rounded spine without needing to generate the roll herself. 10 reps. Safety rolls must be automatic — build repetitions before adding complexity.
Look for: Tuck chin · round the spine · control the roll — this is how you fall safely

Forward Safety Roll from Kneel (No Height Anxiety)

From a kneeling position, gymnast rolls forward — eliminating the height of a standing entry. Builds the roll mechanics without any fall fear. Progress: kneel → squat → standing → from a run (the real use case). Each stage requires 5 clean reps before advancing.
Look for: Tuck chin · round the spine · control the roll — this is how you fall safely

Forward Safety Roll from Run (Real Application)

Short run, trip simulation (coach gently pushes shoulder forward), gymnast executes a forward safety roll from the momentum and returns to standing. This is the actual safety roll use case. It must be practiced from momentum — a static safety roll does not prepare the gymnast for a real fall.

Building it — Reps and consistency once the shape is owned.

Neck Flexion Strengthening (Chin-to-Chest Endurance)

Lying supine, gymnast lifts head and holds chin to chest for 10 seconds. 3x8. The forward safety roll's most important element — chin to chest — requires neck flexor strength. Without it, the gymnast's head contacts the floor, creating neck injury risk.

Tuck Roll Holds

In a standing tuck (chin to chest, knees hugged in), hold for 5 seconds. 3x10. Builds the body-awareness of the tuck position and the hip flexor strength to maintain it. A loose, unsqueezed tuck roll is not a safety roll — it's an uncontrolled fall.

Balance Recovery Drill (Post-Roll Stand)

Forward safety roll, immediately stand and balance on one leg for 2 seconds. 3x8. The safety roll is only useful if the gymnast can recover from it and continue. Practicing the immediate stand-and-balance builds the proprioceptive recovery needed in real competition falls.

Polishing it — Competition-ready cleanup and connections.

Perform the Forward Safety Roll independently

Athlete performs the full Forward Safety Roll on their own — spot only as needed. Goal: consistent, confident, competition-ready execution with the cue: "Tuck chin · round the spine · control the roll — this is how you fall safely."
