← Full Relevé Lock Stand skill breakdown
Learning it — First exposures — slow, spotted, full support.
Relevé Lock on Floor (Eyes Closed)
Stand in relevé, squeeze legs together, hold 10 seconds eyes open then 10 seconds eyes closed. The eyes-closed version exposes any genuine balance weakness masked by visual compensation. 5 reps each.
Look for: Relevé = heels high · lock = squeeze everything · stand = don't wobble
Relevé Lock on Low Beam (Both Feet)
Progress from floor to low beam. Coach stands beside for first 5 reps. Gymnast holds for 5-second count. Progress to full beam, then single-leg relevé lock.
Look for: Relevé = heels high · lock = squeeze everything · stand = don't wobble
Relevé Lock + Half Turn
Hold relevé lock 3 seconds, then execute a half turn, re-lock relevé, hold 3 more seconds. This is directly how the relevé lock appears in competition context — as a setup and landing for turns.
Look for: Relevé = heels high · lock = squeeze everything · stand = don't wobble
Building it — Reps and consistency once the shape is owned.
Single-Leg Relevé Holds (Wall Progression)
Hand on wall → fingertip on wall → no contact. Single-leg relevé 10 seconds each progression level. 3 reps per leg per level. Systematic balance progression that removes wall support as balance improves — more controlled than jumping straight to unsupported.
Heel Rise Pulses (Bilateral + Unilateral)
Standing: 20 bilateral heel rises then immediately 10 per leg unilateral. 3 sets. Builds the gastrocnemius and soleus endurance that sustains relevé positions throughout a beam routine without heel drop.
Towel Toe Scrunches
Seated, foot flat on a small towel, gymnast scrunches the towel toward her using only her toes. 3x15 per foot. Builds intrinsic foot strength that improves balance base in relevé and reduces ankle wobble.
Polishing it — Competition-ready cleanup and connections.
Perform the Relevé Lock Stand independently
Athlete performs the full Relevé Lock Stand on their own — spot only as needed. Goal: consistent, confident, competition-ready execution with the cue: "Relevé = heels high · lock = squeeze everything · stand = don't wobble."
Look for: Relevé = heels high · lock = squeeze everything · stand = don't wobble
Don't just read it — coach it.
